The artist Joana Vasconcelos will cause a sensation in Edinburgh this August with her dazzling outdoor pool Gateway, which is located on the landscaped grounds of the Jupiter Artland Foundation.

Vasconcelos is Portugal’s most valuable contemporary artist. Known for her lavish sculptural installations based on ideas as diverse as popular culture and social policy, she now runs a studio in Lisbon with 50 assistants.

Gateway shows the artist’s commitment to revitalizing traditional skills and is her first permanent assignment in Scotland. The pool’s 11,500 ceramic tiles were made using traditional methods in a 100-year-old Portuguese factory before being hand-painted and glazed with Vasconcelos’ enchanting design.
